Description
In this role, you will carry out detailed preoperative and postoperative patient assessments, utilizing ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and interpreting biometric data for accurate intraocular lens (IOL) selection. You maintain aseptic operating theater practices and enforce sterilization and infection control measures to prevent complications. The surgeon oversees the surgical camp's daily operations, resource planning, and supplies inventory, ensuring smooth and safe delivery of eye care services. You will also provide patient counseling and manage medical record documentation, playing a vital role in clinical decision making and emergency management to optimize visual outcomes for patients undergoing cataract extraction and IOL implantation procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform 30 to 40 cataract surgeries daily using Phacoemulsification and SICS techniques with high precision and efficiency.
- Conduct thorough preoperative evaluations including ophthalmic patient assessment, visual acuity measurement, and biometry interpretation for precise intraocular lens selection.
- Manage postoperative patient care to monitor recovery, manage complications, and ensure adherence to quality and patient safety standards.
- Implement and maintain strict aseptic operating theater practices, sterilization, and infection control protocols to minimize surgical site infections.
- Lead and coordinate a team of three staff members during outreach eye camp operations, optimizing scheduling, resource allocation, and teamwork.
- Oversee surgical instrument inspection and management, ensuring functionality and availability of necessary ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical equipment.
- Monitor inventory levels of intraocular lenses, medicines, and consumables, implementing timely procurement to prevent shortages during camps.
- Handle emergency ophthalmic cases effectively, providing prompt clinical decisions and interventions to avoid permanent vision loss.
- Maintain detailed and accurate medical records, documenting patient history, surgical procedures, and postoperative progress.
- Provide patient counseling to educate on surgery benefits, postoperative care, and visual rehabilitation outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with national licensing requirements and up-to-date certifications including PMDC license and specialty qualifications (FCPS Ophthalmology / DOMS).
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives to enhance surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction in camp settings.
- Participate in training and mentoring of junior staff and surgical team members to build capacity and maintain high standards of care.
